Script timer

Paste a radio or TV script, pick the length, and see whether it fits before anyone reads it. It counts what is spoken, not what is on the page.

Length of the spot
0:28 / 0:30
In the window 369 spoken characters · 81 words · window 360–400

As it stands, it fits a 0:30.

How many words is a 30 second script?

The usual rule of thumb is about 75 words for a :30, roughly two and a half words a second. Words aren’t all the same size, though: “sale” and “refinancing” are both one word. So this timer counts spoken characters instead, the way the original Script Buddy did in 2008. A :30 fits 360 to 400 of them.

What it counts

Only what the voice says. Letters and digits count; spaces and punctuation don’t. Numbers and symbols count as the words they are read as, and anything in (parentheses) is a direction for the voice, so it is skipped.

20
A number counts as it is said: twenty. 6 characters
$20
Symbols count as their word: twenty dollars. 13 characters
50%
fifty percent 12 characters
1,500
one thousand five hundred 22 characters
Rock & Roll
rock and roll 11 characters
(warm, smiling) Hello
Directions in parentheses are skipped: only “hello” counts. 5 characters
